How to choose a private photo vault app
What actually matters in a photo vault: encryption, accounts, recovery and sharing.
Many "vault" apps simply hide files behind a PIN screen. Here's what to check before trusting one with your photos.
1. Real encryption
Look for on-device encryption like AES-256, with the key derived from your secret. A PIN screen alone doesn't protect files if they're copied off the device.
2. No account required
Every account is another password to leak. The best vaults work without one.
3. A recovery option you control
A recovery phrase you hold is safer than an email reset that someone else could trigger.
4. Safety features
Decoy or hidden vaults, a panic pattern and an app disguise help when someone pressures you.
5. Private sharing
If you want to share with one person, look for end-to-end encrypted sharing rather than links.
