How to lock photos on iPhone
Every way to put photos behind Face ID, a passcode or encryption, and which one is right for you.
1. Lock the Hidden album with Face ID
Hide a photo (select it, tap the … menu, then Hide). Then make sure the Hidden and Recently Deleted albums require Face ID: on recent iOS go to Settings → Apps → Photos (older versions: Settings → Photos) and turn on Use Face ID.
This keeps casual browsers out, but anyone who knows your passcode can still open it, and the photos stay in iCloud Photos.
2. Lock the whole Photos app (iOS 18 and later)
Touch and hold the Photos icon, tap Require Face ID. Now the app itself asks for Face ID.
3. Put photos in an encrypted safe
For photos that must stay private even from someone who knows your passcode, move them into an encrypted safe like TwoSafe. Each photo is encrypted on your iPhone and only your pattern opens it. How to hide photos properly.
